Frequently asked questions

Common questions about holistic creative therapy

Here, I address some of the most common questions people ask before embarking on their creative therapy journey. My aim is to demystify the process and help you feel more comfortable and informed.

Do I need to be good at art?

Absolutely not! It's not about the finished product or making something beautiful, and it's not an art lesson - you won't be taught any artistic techniques.

While traditional art-making often comes with rules, Holistic Creative Therapy is about the process, and tapping into your intuition.  It's about being free to play with paint or sand or clay, letting go of what you think your work should look like and exploring your inner world.

How does it work?

Sometimes words are hard.   Our feelings can run so deep that it feels almost impossible to describe how we feel.

Holistic creative therapy allows us to use sand, clay, painting and drawing to express our emotions without the need to talk.  This can be especially beneficial for trauma survivors, children, neurodivergent people and anyone who can find verbal communication hard.

The psychologist Carl Jung believed that a lot of our emotions exist beyond what we're consciously aware of.  By using creative practices we can create a bridge between the conscious and unconscious mind.

In addition, holistic creative therapy recognises that emotions are not just experienced in the mind, but also in the body.  Creative expression, along with breathwork and mindfulness, can help to regulate the nervous system while supporting emotional exploration.  Your sessions will usually include some breathing exercises, somatic therapy and relaxation techniques that you can put into practice in your daily life.  Although we may be addressing what has happened in the past, our goal is to empower you to move forward.

Is it the same as art therapy?

No, it is not a substitute for art therapy, which is a regulated mental health profession with clinical diagnoses and treatment plans. Nor is it a replacement for more targeted mental health care, which should always be handled by qualified professionals.

Sunrise Therapeutic Support is focused on holistic creative therapy - this means that the whole person is considered, mind, body and spirit.  Although you are always welcome to talk about any issues you have, the focus for us is on expressing your internal world through creativity and learning strategies to apply to your everyday life.

What would be good to know before I start?

Before beginning your therapy journey, it's helpful to come with an open mind.

This approach involves self-exploration and creative expression, which can sometimes feel a bit strange.  It can open up emotions that have been buried for a long time, which can be painful at first. You will never be asked to talk about anything that you don't want to and every session will be at your pace.  You will be gently supported throughout the whole process.

Being open to new experiences and committing to engaging with the process will greatly enhance your therapeutic experience and the benefits you receive.
