Discover the world of Sand Play

Discover how this gentle approach can help people of all ages to process difficult feelings without the need to put it into words.

What is Sand Play?

Sand Play is a safe, non-directive form of play therapy, suitable for all ages but especially helpful for younger children from the age of four.

The client uses the sand tray and a collection of objects to create a world.  Everything that is done within the sand tray tells a story - how the sand is moved, what characters and objects are used and how they are positioned.  This enables you to communicate and explore your feelings when words are difficult.

Who benefits from Sand Play?

Although primarily associated with younger children, sand play is suitable for all ages.

Because there is no pressure to talk, it is particularly helpful for those who struggle to express their emotions verbally, or those with situational mutism.

As with Drawing & Talking, it is a powerful tool for clients who have experienced trauma or those who are struggling with their emotions as a result of bereavement, family breakdown, anxiety or depression.

The benefits of Sand Play

Sand is a tactile substance and feeling its coolness, letting it trickle through your fingers and manipulating it has an instantly calming effect on the body.

Using the sand tray to express your inner world reduces the pressure to get things "right", and allows a safe space for you to just be.

Over time, this can help to lower anxiety, reduce stress, build confidence and self-acceptance and allow you to gradually begin to express yourself.
